Multilocus DNA fingerprinting is an efficient means of detecting the genetic similarity of individuals. We present a multinomial model for estimating the conditional probability of the occurrence of a multilocus DNA fingerprinting profile given a sample of individuals and an estimate of the total number of fingerprints in the population. Because of the multinomial nature of the fingerprinting profile, this conditional probability is expressed as a matrix whose entries are the multinomial probabilities of fingerprinting a subset of loci. The probability of an individual having a specific DNA fingerprinting profile can be computed in a single operation by taking the appropriate sum of conditional probabilities. The resulting probability is a useful way of summarizing results of fingerprinting of a set of individuals. The model has been illustrated in computer simulations, comparing the performances of two statistical tests for detecting genetic similarity of two sets of individuals.Q:
