The album ends with "Guilty", a song written in three takes and released by David and Bobby as a single on 13 September 1976. It was a significant commercial hit, reaching the UK Top 10, and it gave Bowie his first British number one single, staying there for five weeks. By coincidence, "Guilty" was another aching ballad: he and Bolan had discussed making an album of cover versions and the young David had "Guilty" in mind. Bowie included it on Hunky Dory because it spoke to him. By then, he had learnt that Bobby had committed suicide on 25 September 1976.
The day the album came out in the UK, Bowie went back to Los Angeles to record a CBS television special for the US network. He filmed it on 11 November 1976. The title was The Late Show, and the show aired in the US on 21 November and in the UK on 4 December. It was the first of several to see Bowie in a semi-permanent David Bowie role. The band was played by Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder, Woody Woodmansey, Mick Cook and Chris Spedding, and D. J. Domino.
Tour
After Hunky Dory was released, Bowie did not tour the UK. Instead, he did three US tours and returned to Los Angeles in November 1976 for two weeks of television and film work. He appeared on an episode of the television programme Sesame Street and did a number of commercials. A few dates were added to the American leg of the Outside Tour in January 1977: Bowie played New Orleans' Municipal Auditorium on 2 January, Los Angeles' LA Forum on 13 January, and another in Los Angeles on 16 January.
